before and after: large french provincial set

June 29, 2015 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Before & After, Milk Paint, News

We found a large French Provincial bedroom set at auction and then had the difficult task of determining paint color! We wanted to show off some of the other paint colors in the Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint line we haven’t used as much on big pieces. There were lots of pieces though so we did some neutral in a Grain Sack/Ironstone mix and some in Mustard Seed Yellow with a custom mix of white wax…

The yellow pieces…

And the neutral pieces…

The bed and the mirror are still available BUT we just did another smaller set in Eulalie’s Sky — can’t wait to show you that one!

before and after: color mixing ooops

June 24, 2015 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Before & After, Milk Paint, News

I decided we needed to do more color mixing, and that we should mix Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint colors Curio and Tricycle to get a great barn red. Good idea, right? Yes…until you mix them at the wrong ratio and get maroon. Ooops! I wish I had a picture. We quickly fixed it with a coat of tricycle by itself and some antiquing wax – it turned out to be a lovely piece!

before and after: mora sofa table

June 22, 2015 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Before & After, Milk Paint, News

The Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint European line launched in January and we’ve been spending the spring getting to know these colors a little better. People ask me quite often if I have a favorite of the new colors. I usually go back and forth for a few minutes and settle on Layla’s Mint. However, Mora has been gaining my favor in the last month or so because I’m starting to notice Mora’s green tones more and more.
This sofa table has a beautiful caned bottom shelf that allowed more light to filter through showing all the subtle green/grayness of Mora. A light antiqued finish enhanced but did not cover up one of our new fave colors!

before and after: typewriter is the new black

June 19, 2015 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Before & After, Milk Paint, News

We’ve been painting several pieces in Miss Mustard Seed’s Typewriter the last few weeks. I love the lightness of typewriter. It is a soft black, almost dark gray, and will never be a high gloss lacquer black. We almost always finish typewriter with antiquing wax to make it a smidge darker. Check out these beautiful pieces…

before and after: beautiful buffet in marzipan

June 17, 2015 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Before & After, Milk Paint, News

We bought this buffet with a china cabinet and decided to finish them in the same colors. Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Marzipan…white wax…lovely!

before and after: day bed in grain sack

June 15, 2015 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Before & After, Milk Paint, News

This day bed screamed 1978. There were several Brady Bunch references and lots of brown, orange and avocado fabric horror stories from our youth!
But, look at her now!! We worked with one of our favorite customers, Renee, on the color and fabric. Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Grain Sack with our custom mix of Antiquing and Furniture waxes paired with a great white/gray stripe took this lovely from groovy to fabulous!

We’ve really been digging through our barn lately to get some pieces we’ve been storing for a while in the store. This piece was in great shape. I wasn’t sure what to use for the pulls on the three doors or how to handle the wood inserts on the glass.

— I hit up the Hardware Bin for some petite hardware. I settled on a bronze/gold pair that were just the right size. Problem one solved!

–We decided to leave the shelves and wood inserts  in the original finish. It was the path of least resistance on this piece and sometimes that is the best way to go. Problem Two, check!

So, after a coat of Miss Mustard Seed’s Tough Coat, two coats of MMSMP in Grain Sack, and a coat of our custom mix of Furniture and Antiquing Waxes, here it is…

before and after: another oldie but a goodie

June 8, 2015 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Before & After, Milk Paint, News

This piece is from a few years, but shows how beautiful Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Linen can be. If you’ve been in the store or ever talked to me about the light neutrals of the line, you know I am a big fan of Grain Sack. I plan to use Linen and Ironstone more, but always come back to Grain Sack! This piece may help me change my mind though – she’s a beauty!

colors of the month: grain sack and kitchen scale

June 3, 2015 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Color of the Month, Milk Paint, News

Wooo-hooo! Summer! School is out and we are ready to have some FUN! Summer has always been my favorite season — my birthday is in July, Jim and I got married in June, I love the 4th of July. And, now that I kids of my own, I get to experience the joys of Summer all over again…

2013-05-30 16.28.08  2013-07-04 09.28.00

The folks at Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint have made Summer even more of a fave because the colors of the month for June are Grain Sack and Kitchen Scale (my favorite neutral and my favorite color!)

Grain Sack it the perfect neutral as far as I’m concerned. I always say it is “not too white, just white enough”. Grain Sack is one of Marian’s favorite colors, named for the color of antique European grain sacks.  It’s a chameleon color, meaning it looks different depending on what is around it.  Sometimes it looks white, sometimes gray and sometimes more beige. Grain Sack is a great color to mix in order to lighten without making the color too pastel.  It pairs well with the other grays in the line – Shutter Gray and Trophy. Some of our greatest hits…

And, Kitchen Scale, a beautiful teal — you know we love it, we painted the 12 ft long paint display in Kitchen Scale!! Kitchen Scale is a rich teal, named after an antique scale Marian once owned in her kitchen.  The scale has since been passed along to Jennylyn, the president of Homestead House Paint Co. Kitchen Scale can be mixed with Linen to achieve a soft, robin’s egg blue.  It pairs well with Grain Sack.

Happy Summer, everyone! See you soon!!Screen Shot 2013-11-20 at 10.27.23 AM

before and after: a credenza

June 1, 2015 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Before & After, Milk Paint, News

Don’t you just love that word? Credenza. I still remember my dad’s office. He had a large desk that was always covered with a million stacks of papers, chairs that outlined the room and a credenza with a phone (rotary, of course), books and a TV. The word reminds me of my youth when I would get off the bus and head into my dad’s office to do my homework or watch TV.

We decided the lattice on this piece needed to go so we removed it and then painted the whole thing in Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Typewriter. After a week or so, we decided it needed a little something extra so we painted the inserts in a custom mix of Dixie Belle Mineral Paint. Look at  it now — completely ready for someone’s office!

before and after: artissimo pieces

June 1, 2015 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Before & After, Milk Paint, News

We’ve been using Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Artissimo quite a bit lately. I have navy in my own home and prefer it to black (not sure if it’s those Kentucky roots or just a natural love of blue?).

Our first piece had been languishing at the barn for over two years. Sometimes if we don’t have an immediate need for a piece, it finds the way to the bottom of a stack of furniture. It’s a nice, old two-tiered ornate table and turned out quite nicely, I think! It is currently available at Old Picket Fence in Noblesville.

The next piece given a fresh look in Artissimo is this fantastic sofa table. It is a great size – perfect for an entry or behind a large sectional. It is still available at fivethirty in Zionsville.

Both pieces were finished with a coat of Miss Mustard Seed’s Antiquing Wax for a rich, navy look!
