Zionsville: what’s new??

July 31, 2015 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: News

Well, let us tell you what’s new! We have lots of great new merchants on Main Street and we are enjoying visiting them!! I’m going to tell you about two of them today and will continue every few weeks or so with some of our other favorites.

First, Village Kitchen…who doesn’t love a bagel? Especially and made-fresh boiled and baked bagel? Stop by and see my pals at the Village Kitchen, located at 112 S Main Street for bagels, breakfast and lunch. I had a delightful BLT on my first visit! And, they are even open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday for dinner until 9. Wow, what a great addition!

And, I’ve hopped over to Moody’s Market and Butcher for some groceries. I know, we are throwing it way back and now have a grocery store in the Village again! Yay! They are located at 20 East Cedar Street and are open 8-8. Lots of great organic and local foods. We are so thrilled they are here (and they’ve already expanded!). Go check out all they have to offer – be sure to get a juice, yum!

before and after: eulalies sky dresser, cabinet

July 29, 2015 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Before & After, Milk Paint

We have grown to love MMSMP white wax in the last few months. We did a bedroom set in Mustard Seed Yellow, and not this cute set in Eulalie’s Sky…

We mixed white wax and furniture wax together for for the body and did a heavier application of white wax along the edges.

They are off to Wisconsin and we will certainly miss them (and their new owner!!).

This year, the band will be Zanna-Doo and we will have the usual food trucks, kids entertainment and our awesome local restaurants! before and after: Jane’s cabinet

July 22, 2015 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Before & After, Milk Paint, News

We have really enjoyed custom painting a few pieces lately based on specific client requests! We worked with sisters recently on a couple of pieces and this is one of my favorites…

ba98_typewriter cabinet

The piece had been languishing in the barn for a while until one of our awesome customers, Jane, started looking for a cabinet to go in the corner of her living room. We updated this piece by filling the drawer pull holes and giving it a coat of Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Typewriter on the outside and French Enamel on the inside (should have taken an inside pic!). We finished with Antiquing Wax and pulled two knobs from the hardware bin for an updated look. Jane is thrilled and so are we!

before and after: console table in mora

July 20, 2015 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Before & After, Milk Paint, News

We really gave this piece a new look – from yellowed oak to fresh green/gray! Once again we decided on Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Mora with a light coat of our custom antiquing and furniture wax mixture. We replaced the horrid knobs with some cute blue, white and gray floral knobs from our hardware bin! What a change, no??

before and after: rustic cabinets

July 17, 2015 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Before & After, Milk Paint, News

We were lucky enough to be able to purchase several rustic cabinets in different styles and have slowly been bringing them into the store. Here are a few!

We decided to freshen this very TALL cabinet with a light coat of MMSMP in Lucketts Green. I love the storage and the curved style on the sides!

We softened this REALLY BRIGHT TURQUOISE with a coat of Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Eulalie’s Sky and then sanded to let a lttle of the turquoise come through…

ba84_eulalies amish cabinet

This a subtle change, but a much needed one! We did a coat of MMSMP Linen all over the cabinet with a mix of our furniture and antique waxes to finish…(SOLD)

I really love this one in Miss Mustard Seed’s Mora with a soft coat of MMSMP antiquing wax. It looks so great in person (and at the barn!)…

before and after: telephone table

July 15, 2015 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Before & After, Milk Paint, News

When I tell my kids that telephones used to be attached to the wall and we had to stay in one place just to talk on the phone, they think it is hysterical! Well kids, we did. In fact, a piece of furniture was created just for the telephone. A telephone table, or gossip bench, was an smart invention in my humble opinion. A place for the phone with a little compartment for the phone books and a place to sit down? Yes, please.

We’ve given this tired telephone table a new life with a coat of Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Lucketts Green, furniture wax and a cool herringbone fabric in green and blue. I think it would be fun to turn the piece into a charging station — practical and an homage to the past!

before and after: trophy dresser

July 13, 2015 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Before & After, Milk Paint, News

I purchased this dresser from a lovely friend who is moving. Her daughter purchased it a while ago and my friend was storing it for her. It’s time to put the house on the market now and she wanted to clear some space so she thought of me! We did one coat of Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Trophy and a coat of our custom mix of furniture and antiquing waxes. I really wanted to highlight the lovely details, so we added some white wax to the raised scroll and beaded areas. I think it looks just lovely!

colors of the month: artissimo and tricycle

July 10, 2015 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Color of the Month, Milk Paint, News

It’s hard to top the colors of the month in June for me…but July comes close! Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Artissimo and Tricycle are colors we work with on a regular basis (especially this time of year in preparation for our nautical/patriotic window at the store).

When I applied to be a Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint retailer, we received a sample starter kit. It included three colors, including tricycle, and this is what I painted…

tri_6_all

Since that Summer of 2012, this is what we’ve painted…

tricycle collage

We almost always finish Tricycle with a coat of antiquing wax to soften the red — it is a very vibrant red and so, so pretty. But, most people prefer a softer, antiqued look!

Artissimo was part of the second wave of Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint colors. We got many requests for a navy and were thrilled when we tried artissimo. We finish with furniture wax  for a slate blue look and antiquing wax for a richer navy.

We are currently working on a custom vanity in artissimo — it is going to knock your socks off!!

before and after: grain sack dresser

July 8, 2015 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Before & After, Milk Paint

This awesome pine dresser was another piece we bought from a customer — we were thrilled to get our hands on it. We painted two coats of Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Grain Sack and added some cute knobs from our hardware bin. Love it!!

before and after: another china cabinet in marzipan

July 6, 2015 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Before & After, Milk Paint, News

Well, it’s official, we are obsessed with Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Marzipan. We can’t stop, we won’t stop. It is such a beautiful, rich cream and we love finishing it with white wax. The white wax on the cream gives a lovely European look and we love it! With special thanks to my pal Kristen who had this piece, didn’t need it and recognized how cute it would be painted — you were right, K!!

Tablescape: our nautical is showing

July 3, 2015 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Events, News

We had the great pleasure of doing a tablescape for the Sullivan Munce Garden Tour in June and wanted to show you our creation.

2015-06-19 14.58.26

I decided to do a nautical/patriotic table top because I love the 4th of July! I love red, white and blue…and our nautical floats…our fake dock piling made from pool noodles. Yep, you read that correctly and here’s how we did it (thanks, Pinterest)

We measured and cut two large pool noodles into lengths of 20″, 30″ and 36″. We then covered the noodles with woodgrain contact paper. We cut three round pieces to cover the tops and tied them with some rope ribbon I had at the store!

2015-06-02 11.00.33 2015-06-02 11.01.07 2015-06-02 11.44.42

I think it turned out really cute and added some much needed height to the table…

2015-06-19 14.58.08-1

For the individual place settings, we used some old Anchor plates we sell at the store, a blue willow saucer and a knot with a galvanized letter in it…

2015-06-19 14.58.34

You may notice the little mint life saver wrapped around the napkin (thanks again, Pinterest). For cups, I used some ceramic mason jars in blue with a pinwheel paper straw.

I was really pleased with how it turned out!!

before and after: schloss chest of drawers

July 1, 2015 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Before & After, Milk Paint, News

We found this beautiful, old chest of drawers at auction. It had great bones, wood casters, nice hardware — a clean slate for us to give a new life with some Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint. We chose Schloss, one of our newer European colors. It is a light taupe-gray and looks amazing with both antiquing and white wax. We chose a light application of antiquing wax for this piece. A dear friend bought this one, I can’t wait to see it in her space!
