We live in a house that was built in the early 90’s and have lived here for almost 16 years. Raising four boys and starting a business pushed some of our home projects for a bit – though we did a kitchen remodel, replaced the flooring in the downstairs and have now started in the upstairs bathrooms! One area I have wanted to tackle for a while now is our entry area. It is mostly stairs so we knew this would make a big impact!
The original spindles felt dated to me and in all my pinterest research, I was drawn to the farmhouse square style. Lucky for me, I have a handy husband! He researched what size we needed, ordered at a local hardwood specialty store, Northwest Lumber, and then cut the boards to size. I also felt the tops of the posts were a little outdated so we found a more famhouse modern style cap to cover. He cut the exisiting top off and we put the cap over it.
Next, the paint…I used Jolie in Espresso on the banister and we primed and then used our regular trim paint for the baseboards, spindles and surround. The best part of the whole project was painting with the majority of the spindles out of the way! It was so easy.
Then, the carpet…It’s a bold choice, I know. I wanted something eye-catching and fun. We have a lot of bright colors in our home and thought a neutral was in order but the herringbone/chevron gave us the style we wanted. Claghorn Flooring, a Zionsville business, had the carpet and we used them for install.

We have two matching side tables that were finished in Jolie’s 2020 color of the year, Legacy. These started out a little rough, especially with the white mystery material on the tops. We sanded that down and started fresh. After two coats of Jolie paint and wax, we grabbed some complementary knobs from the hardware bin to complete the look! What do you think?

After a few hours of painting, which included dry time and chicken quesadillas for dinner, I’m back to work with my Jolie Clear Wax and a Wax Brush I found in the basement! I love how easy it is to apply wax. People often ask if a brush is necessary and while the answer is no, it is a worthwhile investment if you have several projects on the books. Check out how easy this is. Just wipe off the excess with a lint-free towel.

While we are at home on #coronacation (as named by my 15 year old), I finally decided to tackle the bathroom cabinet project in the boys’ bathroom. For those of you who may not know, I have four boys aged 9-17 and they all share a bathroom. Part of the hold up, as most of you have struggled with also, was the color. I chose Jolie Paints in Sage as a soft but light, bright color because their bathroom has dark walls. Here’s a link to my introductory video where I show you the before and talk about my plans for the project. Stay tuned all week as I share the different parts of the process – painting, waxing and hardware.

People often ask how our paints work on caning. As you can see on this piece, it works like a charm! We used the equivalent of a sample size of Jolie Paints in Antique White on this cute little side table with some extra storage! Heavy distressing and clear wax complete the look. Contact us for a local Jolie paint delivery during the Coronacation (as named by my favorite second child)!
