before and after: classic

June 29, 2020 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Before & After, Jolie Paint

Jolie Paints Classic Navy is just that

I’m noticing a trend with our recently finished pieces – keeping the hardware! When it is this gorgeous, why not? We decided to go with Jolie Paints in Classic Navy on this piece which we are calling a vanity. Could be a vanity? But also a desk, serving or entry table and so much more. Two coats of Jolie Classic Navy and Clear Wax finish it off.

before and after: bliss, that’s what

June 26, 2020 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Before & After, Jolie Paint

I honestly can’t get over the hardware. Original. traditional and wonderful. We knew we wanted to keep the hardware and searched for a (not white) color to coordinate. We settled on Jolie Paints in Bliss, a happy little aqua that, I think, takes this piece from meh to wowza!

Two coats of Bliss and some Jolie Clear Wax, that’s all it took! What are you painting today?

before and after: a cute table

Another cute table from fivethirty home!

It is certainly what we have become known for over the years. Give us all the sweet side tables — whether they be rustic or dainty, oval or rectagular — we love them all! Here’s a great example of what I think our store is all about: cute table, great color, fantastic price. It’s just what we do…

before and after: yes, you can paint fabric

June 22, 2020 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Before & After, Jolie Paint

I’m ecstatic about how this piece turned out. The lines were there, the little medallion details and fun shape too. But that fabric, ugh! Problem solved with Jolie Paints in French Gray. We thinned the water by pouring the paint in a separate container and squirting water from our handy water bottle and then we mixed with a stir stick. We did 4 thin coats, allowing to dry overnight, on the fabric and two coats of paint with NO WATER on the wood details. Two coats of Jolie Clear Wax finish the piece.

Information from Jolie about painting fabric:

Jolie Paint can be used on some fabrics; however, NATURAL FABRICS and LEATHERS work best. Add up to 40% water to the paint in a separate mixing container and apply the paint in thin layers, allowing it to dry completely (preferably overnight) between coats. Sand the paint between coats to prevent it from forming a crust, which may crack when weight is applied to it. This technique is best executed on upholstery where the fabric is pulled taut. On furniture with a lot of give, you may notice cracks over time. Jolie Finishing Wax can be used to seal and protect the painted fabric.

before and after: it always comes back to the hardware!

The bling!

We have been pulling lots of tables out recently and this one is a favorite for sure. Jolie in Gesso White is a great neutral and a perfect white in a sea of many shades of white. We topped this one off with a little blue and white ceramic knob which accented the piece quite nicely. It coordinates with our blue and white look and would fit any traditional guest room or living area.

Jolie Paint – You’ve Got This

I’m confident you’ll agree with me that the painted furniture in  fivethirty home is amazing. The colors, the smooth finishes, the details – each piece is perfection.

Could I, someone with marginal craft/design skills, take a garage sale desk and turn it into something that I would find inside that store?

Yep, I could. I did. And you can do it too. Really! Here’s how:

Expert Guidance at fivethirty home

I called Erica at fivethirty home. I was searching for a bright color – but not too bright or didn’t lean shabby chic/country. I was going for color with a pop that would add a little more atmosphere to my new work from home space (also known as the living room).

Erica recommended Jolie Paint in Verdigris. “It has this really modern feel,” she promised. She was right. Jolie Verdigris is this fantastic green/blue that changes color with the light.

Erica packaged up the paint, clear wax, and a Jolie paintbrush. I was ready to go. Or was I?

Jolie Painting Prep
I watched Erica paint her bathroom vanity to get expert application tips.

I moved the furniture to the garage for painting, but if you’re neat, you can do this inside your house. This paint doesn’t have a smell or fumes. And you don’t have to sand. I was a little skeptical about this because the top of the desk I was painting had seen some wear.

Jolie Paint
I was worried about brush marks and making everything look/feel smooth (again, the desk had a bit of wear). I don’t have a painting technique. None of that matters with this paint.

Jolie Paint goes on like butter! BUTTER!

I applied three coats. The first coat gave me that general coverage. The second coat gave me that pop of color, and it was easier to paint. The third and final coat really evened everything out and helped me see what sections I hurried over during layers one and two. I didn’t need to worry about brush strokes – you don’t have those weird ridges as you do with latex or oil paint. Did I tell you it’s like BUTTER!?!

Paint time went quickly. Jolie Paint dries within half an hour. I just worked my way around the piece until it was finished.

Jolie Wax Finish
The final touch is Jolie Wax . I was thinking of using a darker wax. Erica recommended starting with a clear wax and living with it for a while. Well, I’m living with it forever.

The wax application was easy. Wax on. Wax off-ish. Just like Karate Kid. The clear wax gave the overall look more dimension, a mild shine, and a very smooth touch.

Jolie Paint – You’ve got this!

Painting with Jolie Paint is really easy. Paint. Wax. And that’s it.

Worried about starting like I was? Ask questions and dive in.

Erica has an expert eye for color and lots of pro tips. fivethirty home will outfit you with the paint and tools you need to turn that furniture find into that perfect piece for your home.

before and after: such a happy color

June 10, 2020 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Before & After, Jolie Paint

Jolie Paints Verdigris is a happy color – it makes me happy, it makes the furniture happy. I feel like Pharrell is just around the corner waiting to burst into song whenver we pop open the quart of paint. Two coats on this intereting piece and it is looking soooo much better!

before and after: dresser in mms laylas mint

June 5, 2020 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Before & After, Milk Paint

This dresser did not last long – about three days or so in the store! It is a beautiful old piece, very solid, with unique details. We painted it in Miss Mustard’s Seed’s Milk Paint in Layla’s Mint on the outside and Boxwood on the inside. Painting tonal accents is one of my favorite things to do when we paint the drawers. It’s a nice surprise to open the drawers and find a different color and I like to do versions of light green/dark green or light blue/dark blue.

We added a coat of MMSMP antiquing wax to play up all the details and some of our favorite floral knobs from the hardware bin. We hope the young lady enjoys this lovely piece!

June 1, 2020 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Erica's Pick, Events

So excited for this fun, safe Summer get-together!

On Thursday evenings this summer from 5 to 9 pm, residents can sit at one of the many tables set up on Main Street, order from local restaurants and remain socially distanced while enjoying dinner on the Brick Street. During this event, residents can also visit the retailers lining the Brick Street – a perfect night on the town.

Thanks to efforts from the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Town of Zionsville, Night on The Bricks launches Thursday, June 4. This event will continue for nine weeks through July 30.

Tables will be pre-set on Main Street, but BYOC (Bring Your Own Chairs)…
