We are fortunate to have so many amazing customers! Beth, who has shopped with us since the beginning, recently picked up some Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Shutter Gray to paint the kitchen cabinets at her lake house. It looks great and shows how our milk paint can really transform a space AND it is a great kitchen cabinet tutorial! Thanks, Beth!!
“I began by removing all the door and drawer fronts, along with removing the hardware. I laid them all flat on tables and did give them just a light sanding before I applied the first coat of paint. I used 1 part paint and water with 1 part bonding agent for the first coat.”
“I let that dry, and the next day applied a second coat of paint with only 1 part paint, and 1/2 part bonding agent. After that dried, I applied the white wax just in the ridges and creases and wiped away any excess on the flat surfaces. I applied it pretty thick because I really wanted the white to stand out and define the bevels. After that was thoroughly dry, I then applied clear wax over the entire door and buffed it. Then repeated with a second layer of wax and buffing after it was dry.”
“After the doors were completed, I started in on the cabinets themselves. I decided to paint a contrasting color to the interior of the cabinets. I used 1 part paint with 1 part bonding agent. I did not sand anything to prepare the surface! I just decided to go for it! After that dried, I did apply a second coat with half the bonding agent. I only applied one coat of wax and minimal buffing to the interiors.”
“I absolutely love how everything turned out. I love that I had minimal prep work to get started, and didn’t have to worry about how even my brush strokes, were, etc. The paint is a very forgiving medium, and I felt like the wax really brought out the finish. I will be using Miss Mustard Seed’s milk paint whenever I go to refinish any pieces in the future! P.S. I also painted the IKEA kitchen cart pictured here, and finished off the butcher block top with Miss Mustard Seed’s Hemp Oil Wood finish that you recommended. It works great as well, and is perfect for food prep without worrying about the finish. Thanks for your advice!!”
