Product of the Month: tough coat

April 17, 2019 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Milk Paint, News, Product of the Month

We love the product of the month for April, tough coat!

Our premium, non yellowing tough coat provides extra durability against general wear and tear, water damage and food stains. Perfect for those high traffic surfaces such as table tops, seating, doors and floors. Apply with a roller or brush onto recently painted or clean, non oily/greasy surfaces.

If applying to a recently painted surface, allow the surface to dry 24-36 hours before applying. For maximum durability, apply two coats waiting 2-4 hours between coats. In humid areas, longer drying times may be required. 500 mL covers approximately 75 sqft. Easy clean up with soap and warm water.  Dries to a matte finish.

Product of the Month: Furniture Wax

March 22, 2019 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Milk Paint, News, Product of the Month

If you haven’t used Miss Mustard Seed’s Furniture Wax, you are missing out on a lovely finish. Our beeswax based wax is super smooth and very malleable. Check out that consistency…

It is an amazing product to work with — lots of work time before it dries and no detectable odor make it a pleasure to use to finish all types of porous paints. Yep, that’s right, not just for milkpaint! It can be used on Chalk and Clay paints as well as flat latex. Stop in soon to see!

Product of the Month: Hemp Oil

February 13, 2019 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Milk Paint, News, Product of the Month

oh boy oh boy oh boy

This month’s product of the month is one of my favorites of the whole line, all natural hemp oil. When I talk about hemp oil during our classes at the store, the attendees usually purchase some hemp oil because I gush and gush about its many uses and wonderful properties.

Hemp-web

  1. We use it on all of our wood pieces that will not be painted before we bring them in the store. It is a great way to clean, nourish and rejuvenate wood pieces.
  2. Wet sanding…if you haven’t done this, you must try. In a nutshell: paint, dry, squirt on the hemp oil, break out the 220 sandpaper and enjoy the smoothest finish you’ve ever felt.
  3. Resist: Apply a little hemp oil between two color of milk paint and create your own chippy goodness.
  4. Cast iron and metal: Season and clean your cast iron and metal pieces because ta-da, Hemp Oil is 100% food safe.
  5. Wood kitchen islands and tables, cutting boards and anything else you eat off of. So easy and good for the wood!

product of the month: brush soap

January 23, 2019 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Milk Paint, Product of the Month

The product of the month is one we use all the time to clean our wax and paint brushes. It is the creation of another MMSMP retailer and is also a green product. It smells divine and makes our brushes oh-so-soft! Stop by the store and ask to clean our brushes (I’m not kidding about this – you need to see it in action)…

product of the month: wax puck

December 14, 2018 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Milk Paint, Product of the Month

Our hardened wax puck, December’s Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint Product of the Month, can be used to create a two color resist. We teach this technique in our MMSMP Milk Paint 101 class. It gives the piece a nice aged look. Here we used the wax puck on the carved details of this stool and then painted the whole piece in MMSMP typewriter. A little sanding and the gold shines through!

Here’s what the puck itself looks like…you can find at the store or online.

product of the month: antiquing wax

November 14, 2018 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Milk Paint, Product of the Month

If you’ve read this blog or ever talked with me about painting, you know I love Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint Antiquing Wax…

It is a rich brown – black and perfect for adding depth to many of the MMSMP colors. We almost always use antiquing wax on Outback Petticoat, Tricycle and Typewriter.

We like to mix some clear furniture with antiquing wax to soften it a little for lighter colors like Farmhouse White, Schloss and Layla’s Mint.

And, if you add the antiquing wax to our white wax, a lovely gray is created and will soften the whites without a hint of brown, give Trophy a weathered look and take any of the green tint out of Mora.

product of the month: MMSMP aprons

October 21, 2018 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Milk Paint, News, Product of the Month

You know all about our aprons if you’ve attended one of our Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint workshops. For those who haven’t been to class (yet), our aprons are a lovely gray and have the MMSMP logo on the front.

They are available for purchase on our website.

product of the month: beeswax

Our Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint Beeswax can be used in several different ways. During our class at the store, we often talk about how versatile it is. One of the techniques taught during the class is the beeswax resist. Each member chooses their own color combinations and the results are varied depending on how much beeswax was applied.

Our Beeswax can also be used as a finish for milk paint or wood. I recommend applying it with a cloth because a little bit goes a very long way!

product of the month: Look Book 2

July 20, 2018 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Milk Paint, Product of the Month

If you haven’t picked up one of our Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint look books, what are you waiting for? They are chock full of great information about Milk Paint and are real eye candy for the interior design fans among us! I love my copies of  — I’ve made notes, been inspired (ahem, copied) a few finishes and enjoyed reading Marian and some of my fellow retailer’s advice and painting tips.

Look book two, where the paint is flying, is a celebration of our European color line.

product of the month: bonding agent

June 22, 2018 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Milk Paint, Product of the Month

Our Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint product of the month for June is one of the most important products in the whole line! As many of you know, Milk Paint will not adhere to nonporous surface. A good rule of thumb is: the shinier the piece, the more chippy your piece will be. If you want a more opaque, “refined” look, bonding agent will be your new BFF.

We use bonding agent about 95% of the time because our customers like full coverage with slightly distressed edges. We also use Bonding Agent on what I have termed a “sliding scale” where zero bonding agent is for raw wood, terra cotta, unsealed brick and stone and very worn pieces and double (twice as much as the paint measurement) for things that are varnished, metal and other impenetrable items. For basic old furniture with an old finish, we stick to somewhere in between!

Here is some great info from the Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint Blog about Chippy vs. Non-Chippy! Happy Painting!!

May MMSMP product of the month

May 18, 2018 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Milk Paint, News, Product of the Month

Would you like to relax while you wax your piece of furniture? Look no further than our product of the month for May, MMSMP Lavendar Wax.

It is the same formula you know and love, but it is lavender scented. Smells divine!!

product of the month: white wax

August 18, 2017 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Before & After, Milk Paint, Product of the Month

We’ve become big fans of our white wax in the last few years. I used to be be an “antiquing wax or bust” kind of painter but I really like the look of the white wax on our colors to add a softer look or on our whites to make them even more vibrant.

Here’s a new piece we finished in MMSMP Ironstone and White Wax…

We also love, love, love the white wax on Layla’s Mint, one of our August colors of the month…

Product of the Month: tough coat

April 6, 2017 by Erica Carpenter Filed Under: Milk Paint, News, Product of the Month

We love the product of the month for April, tough coat!

Tough coat can be used as matte sealer on milk paint or as a clear primer to block any bleed through before painting with Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint or any porous paint. Here we are using tough coat on the top of a mahogany desk that had been sanded. Since we wanted to use a lighter color, tough coat will help block the potential bleed through!

Read all about how Miss Mustard Seed used it to seal her dining room table.
